What is Substance Use Disorder?

Substance Use Disorder

Substance use disorder is a serious medical condition in which a person’s addiction to an intoxicating substance (drugs or alcohol) causes serious health issues. It is important to identify and treat substance use disorder when it arises to prevent serious health issues.

In this article, we are going to define substance use disorder, talk about its causes and how to treat it.

Substance Use Disorder Defined

Substance use disorder (also known as substance abuse) is a medical condition that occurs when an individual’s use of drugs or alcohol leads to health issues and/or problems at work or home.

Causes Substance Use Disorder Causes & Systems

The exact cause of substance use disorder is not fully understood. That being said, there are certain factors that may increase a person’s risk of developing substance use disorder, including:

  • Genetics

  • Emotional Distress

  • Depression & Anxiety

  • PTSD

  • And More

Treating Substance Use Disorder

Substance use disorder is often difficult to treat and requires a multi-faceted approach by trained medical professionals. The first step in treatment is recognizing the problem. Once that has been achieved, the individual needs to get sober. Going cold turkey is often not the recommended method. Sobering up under the care and supervision of trained medical professionals is the best course of action. After that, treatment involves helping the individual remain sober through medication, therapy, and other treatment methods.

Case Management & Clinical Intervention Explained

Clinical Intervention

If you or a loved one is struggling with substance abuse or addiction, there are many treatment options at your disposal. In this article, we are going to explain how case management and clinical intervention work and why they’re beneficial for individuals struggling with addiction.

Case Management

Case management begins with a general phone assessment of the client and family. This assessment includes client’s demographics, history of substance abuse, prior treatment(s), mental health diagnosis, and family dynamics.

Communication with family, client and treatment providers remains consistent before, during and after treatment. Case Management provides accountability to continue on the recovery journey for the client and each family member during the transition out of treatment. Accountability in recovery entails meeting attendance, drug and/or alcohol monitoring, coaching, therapy and implementing the treatment plan provided by the facility. Clarity individualizes this to fit each client and family's needs. For the family, this includes learning appropriate boundaries and coaching throughout the treatment process. We provide referrals to family members, as needed.

Individual Recommendations for Family Members:
